Pima PTO News
Well Pima Families, it’s that time of the year again. It’s hard to believe that school is just two weeks away.
I just wanted to update you on a few things (and try not to overwhelm you).
Registration Packets: The office has informed us they will be mailed out at the beginning of next week, so look for those to arrive soon.
Back to School Open House:
Volunteers needed immediately: We are looking for copy volunteers right away. We need at least 5 volunteers to begin the school year. To find out more about this opportunity contact our new Volunteer Coordinator Charlotte Talson at PimaPTOVolunteer@gmail.com.
Fundraiser: Pima will be participating in Shopping Makes Cents beginning July 26 and running through August 31. For more information please download the flyer (PDF, 5.6MB) or pickup one at our back to school open house.
Pima Garden: Pima is proud to announce the return of the new and improved Pima Garden. Our students and staff will be working with Ms. Lynette to establish a better and richer garden on the Pima campus. It will be located near the Q Building, in 6 raised flower beds. We are all excited about this project and we look forward to it getting underway the beginning of August. Please stay tuned to find out when we will be harvesting!
PTO Board Meetings: Aug. 18th, Sept. 14th, Oct. 5th or 19th, Nov. 9th, Dec. 14th, Jan. 11th, Feb. 8th, Mar. 8th, Apr. 12th, May 10th – All meetings are subject to change (scheduling conflicts happen). OK, so I may have missed the mark on not overwhelming you, my apologies. But I hope you can tell how excited I am about this coming school year. Thank you for taking the time to review all this information (hope I haven’t over loaded you). You can look forward to more Pima News in the near future. Keep an eye out for important dates and events for our school.
As always if you have any questions or if I can be of help, please feel free to contact me at 480-219-5657 or PimaPTOPresident@gmail.com.

During Spring 2009, Pima parent Trisha Hammer wrote to Eric Meyer (SUSD Board Member and District 8 Representative) regarding the education budget crisis facing Arizona. Below is Representative Meyer's response.
----------
Trisha,
Thank you for your letter concerning the budget. I will not support the deep cuts that are being proposed to our states education, health care and social services systems. As a Scottsdale School Board member I have had to work to balance our districts budget over the last two years. This was a challenge. My legislative colleagues made the largest cuts in the history of the state to public education. I voted against these cuts. When they passed the district closed a school, stopped text book adoptions, laid off 25% of administrators district wide, increased class size and let teachers and programs go. Arizona now spends the least per student of any state in the country and has the largest class sizes other than Utah. The current budget proposes cuts that far exceed those that were passed in the past two years. The Board and the district will have no choice but to implement these reductions. This will lead to the loss of programs and larger class sizes. At the middle and high school level teachers will be seeing approximately 40 students per class and 200 kids per day. This is 50 students more per day than teachers were seeing just three years ago. This is no way to prepare our children for college and the work force. I do not support the deep cuts to the Kids Care Program and AHCCCS as the Governor has suggested. This will throw 46,000 children and over 300,000 adults off the healthcare insurance rolls. With no other choice they will go without care or find themselves seeking care in the emergency room. As an emergency medicine physician I know that this is not a cost effective way to provide care. As a state we will also loose hundreds millions in Federal watching funds that helps to offset the cost of this care. With this cut and the others proposed by the Governor to the healthcare system, we are undermining the viability of our entire healthcare system. A recent ASU study suggested that 42,000 jobs will be lost in the healthcare industry alone if the proposed cuts are passed in the budget. We have other choices as a legislature and should be making them for our children, our sick and our state. Thank you for writing and keep advocating for a sensible solution to our budget crisis. Sincerely, Eric Meyer M.D. Representative District 11 Education Committee Transportation & Infrastructure Committee 602-926-3037 emeyer@azleg.gov ----------
Q&A with the Governing Board
Keeping informed and involved at the District level is very important. With that in mind, prior to the 2008 election we reached out to the Governing Board candidates and asked them questions we feel are particularly relevant to the Pima community. We have posted the answers from incumbents Eric Meyer and Jennifer Petersen and new Board member Bonnie Sneed for your review:
